linux on USB drive

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a linux system that boots off a USB drive. I want to cut down on writes as much as possible. I assume /proc is really in memory and not on the disk? I have a system without a swap partition and I'd like to get rid of as much of /var as possible.

Anyone got any pointers on how to do this? I'm looking at RUNT but it needs a boot floppy and I don't have a floppy drive, just the USB.
