Is a partial 'upgrade' on Debian possible??

That's certainly what I would suggest, but you do need to be aware that
unstable sometimes is unstable, uninstallable, badly broken, etc. If you
can afford to upgrade a test system before the production systems, do
so. Or monitor the debian-devel mailing list or the #debian IRC channel.
Be prepared to get your hands dirty on occasion.
That being said, I run unstable on all of my systems, and I very rarely
have major problems. Others will report significantly different
experiences.
And as for "KDE 3 sometime reasonably soon"... I havne't been following
all that closely, but I believe it depends mostly on the GCC3.2
transition. I don't know how soon "reasonably soon" will end up being.
