You might be able to convince the DHCP server to do the DNS updates for you - 
ISC DHCP claims to be able to this. But I don't know about win2000 servers.

Not sure what this is, but windows clients will apparently try both unsigned 
and signed versions.

If you don't need to do the signed thing, and can install dhclient, something 
like the following in /etc/dhclient.conf will probably help.
send fqdn.fqdn "mikalsbox";
send fqdn.encoded off;
send fqdn.server-update on;
do-forward-updates on;
