the hardware rearranges the bits so that there are never more than three
ones or zeros in a row, otherwise the head loses track of where it is.

So it's entirely possible the first two patterns you have are actually
almost the same on a hardware level. What you suggest is probably sufficient
for your average floppy, but not really enough for a modern hard drive.
