SquirrelMail might do what you want.  It seems to be light on
dependencies (unlike IMP, which needs 1/2 the world), seems to have a
light "GUI" and claims to use real HTML (without Javascript if you
want).  It talks to an IMAP server, so handles multiple mboxes (don't
know about the "at once" though)...

...  pretty easy to setup too, unless you want it to talk SSL, in
which case it just seems broken...
