[clug] Hardware RAID

List,

I'm purchasing a PC workstation to dual-boot Win2K and Mandrake.

My question is this: if I buy a RAID card to mirror two drives, can I
expect the card to behave as if it's an IDE controller with one drive?
Or does the OS have to know about it.

The reason I'm getting a card when Linux is able to do software RAID, is
I want to boot from it and I want the OSes to be totally blind to it.
The aim of mirroring is so I don't have to cry my eyes out when a drive
fails, the speed boost on read is just really nice (I'm doing some big
simulations so it might help).

I'm spcifically looking at the Adaptec 1200A dual-channel RAID card,
it's about $150. Is this known to work with Linux? The linux
compatibility list mentions the 2400 so I guess that's a yes.
