[clug] Non locally defined printers?

Can the lp command cope with a non-locally defined destination?
I don't want to have to maintain printqueues for all the printers in csiro.

ie: could a user's $PRINTER environment be set to a URL
 and would printing then "just work".

Assume that the printers are "real"
 ie: multiprotocol networked printers that understand postscript.
