At the recently re-convened Canberra Chapter of AUUG (www.auug.org.au),
we discussed a local strategy to lobby the local government to look
more seriously into the use of Open Standards software. The electronic
voting system used at the last local election is an example of the local
success of using Open Standard software (in this case, Linux-based) in
government.

We here at DCS at ANU have used exclusively Linux on the desktop for
the past 3 1/2 years, with a mix of Linux and Solaris servers sitting in
behind it all. The experience has been quite good.

I will be giving a talk about it at the upcoming CAUUG Technical Symposium
on Interoperation to be held on Saturday afternoon on Nov. 30.

Stay tuned for more details.

Cheers,

Bob Edwards.
