| My SmartModem 288 has three additional LED's on the front surface.  These

Don't the RX and TX leds falsh anyways?

Do you have and doco for the modem? most modems can be reprogrammed to act
in different ways. You'll probably have to add something to your modem
initialisation string:

ATSTOPANOYINGFLASHING 0
