kernel compile files

Which files are installed in a normal kernel make install?  I'd like to catch
them all and tar them up for distribution.

I know the best way to do this is chroot, but I'm not totally sure how to go
about it.

I've also tried to read through the debian make-kpkg program, and my head is
still spinning.
