As I mentioned earlier, under Mac OS (pre X), there was the option of 
TrashMan.  TrashMan would delete files after some configured amount of 
time spent in the Trash.

In my email, "delete" moves things to the "Trash" folder, and most of my 
email clients will happily "hard delete" these messages after they've 
been stored for a month (or one month from the date sent or received - 
it doesn't matter that much to me that I've bothered to find out the 
details yet).
