Hi Rob,
       I also run a P166 64MB RAM with RH7.2/Gnome. It's not that
slow, quite useable even cf the AMD 1.4GHz system I use at work.

Is the system response network related? Try turning eth0 off and
check the response:  /sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
