I assume that you can ping the box from elsewhere?

If so, there are two obvious possibilities:

1.  The services you are trying to reach are not running.

I don't think telnet is enabled by default.  Nor is samba.  Not sure about 
NFS.  Try ssh'ing to the box instead.

2.  You probably have default firewall settings enabled

ipchains -L

or

iptables -L

will help sort out that one.
