printing in debian

I'm just switching to Debian 2.2r2 (from Red Hat 6.2).
Having trouble getting the printer to work. 

Frege:/home/greg# /usr/sbin/lpc start lp
lp:
	printing enabled
/usr/sbin/lpc: connect: Connection refused
	couldn't start daemon
Frege:/home/greg# 

The following line is all thats in /etc/hosts.allow

ALL: LOCAL 192.168.48. 127.0.0.1

What's going on? I'm happy to provide more info, but I don't
know what would be useful - printing is dark magic to me.
