usb 2.0 external cd/hdd bootable for Linux? Any one tried?

Hello All,
I have been looking at usb 2.0 peripherals like external cdrw and hdd.  I 
read that the devices are bootable from an up to date bios.  It seems that 
usb 2.0 supports linux kernel 2.4 and seems logical that it should work 
perfectly - having been burnt by technology in the past - I wonder has 
anyone tried it?
