Debian / Telstra ADSL Problem...

I assume that's ppp0? Check the kernel logs. Is PPP support in your kernel,
with all the required options?

I don't know what debugging stuff pppoeconf gives you, but it'd be worth
checking out.

Copy the configuration over to Debian and use that then :)
