Upgrading my monitor - comments sought

Although conventional wisdom dictates that:

        If it ain't broke, don't fix it

I am nevertheless exploring the likely benefits of moving from an
adequate 14" monitor to a 17" monitor.

A visit to the latest Computer Fair showed that the following models are
readily available:
        
        Diamond View (Mitsubishi Australia); and
        LG (from Iran?)

In addition, the flavour of the month appears to be "flat monitors"
which I have yet to explore in greater detail (they are certainly more
attractive to look at - but do they deliver?) .

Any advice will be gratefully received.
