Unfortunately Debian have messed with it. Runlevels 2,3,4,5 are identical on an
out-of-the-box Debian system.
Using update-rc.d (or rcconf, a more gumby interface to it) is the
correct way of disabling the display manager, assuming you don't want to
remove it altogether.
