installing debian

OK, so I installed debian on a VMware machine. I was glad to see it
included explicit support for VMware with X (vmware_drv.o).

When I boot, it tries to load X and then terminates with "no screens
found". I know very little about XF86Config. As far as I know, the
install software should configure it for you and it should "just work"
(as mentioned in previous posts).

Once again debian fails the simple "default" install test. Ordinarily I
would just say "well maybe it's because of VMware" but the installation
claimed to support it by providing the option. This is like the 10th
attempt at installing Debian and on every single occasion, it simply
hasn't worked (without prior Linux knowledge and lots of hacking).
I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, I mean it _is_ free so one
can't complain, but when comparing it with other distros, it fails on
the old "can a newbie install it?" test.
