Dial on deman ppp config question

Hey all.

I have a dial on demand ppp connection on a machine. It works fine. Even
when there is no dialup connection, there is a ppp0 entry in ifconfig. How
do I determine if I am currently dialled or not?

[I have a script I would like to run to collect mail, but I only want it
to run if there is already a connection. I don't want it dialling every 15
minutes]
