Printing in RH7.2. printtool test ok,lpr from command line fails, Any ideas?

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen

I am having problems with printing on Redhat 7.2.  I have run  printtool
and configured a network printer.  Sending a test page to this printer
from printool works fine.  However, when I try and print from the
command line with something like

echo "Test" | /usr/bin/lpr
echo "Test" | /usr/bin/lpr -Plp1

both result in a page being printed with the solitary words at the top

"Unkown device: lips3"

Anyone know what I might be able to do to fix this problem?
