I got a more expensive scanner (HP6350C), but you may be able to find some
suitable info at:
http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html

There was some recent patches to the scanner support in the kernel, but you
can probably just backport the current Linux 2.4 kernel code to a previous 2.4
version. Look at http://www1.jump.net/~dnelson/linux/usb/ too.
