Disabling the knob

You know how laptops have that little knob for the mouse in the center of
the keyboard. Does anyone know if it's possible to disable it? Can the
kernel/X server actually distinguish between the knob and the touchpad?

I keep bumping it while typing. I found plenty of references to disabling
the touch on the touchpad, but that's not what I want.

It's a Dell if it matters. Any ideas?
