(a) tried userppp (ie ppp)?

(b) Try restricting the line speed - the modem may be loosing carrier.

(c) You have turned off call waiting and disconnected everything else from the
phone line, haven't you? There's no crackle or pops or noise on the line? (If
it's a problem you'll be able to hear it when you talk to someone on it.)
