ATA 33, ATA 66 and ATA 100

One little techincal question... if a computer motherboard is set up 
for an IDE hard drive ... and presumably that means ATA 33 because 
the m/board was made in 1996/7 ... then if I connect one of the 
current ATA 100 hard drives ... will it work properly?  Or do I have 
to purchase a special ATA 100 controller or look for a second hand 
ATA 66 hard disk??
