One example where it does matter is where there are two possible matching
routes.  e.g.  if there is a route to a subnet that's different than
that to a superset of that network.

We have this situation where the gateway to 10.61.3.0/24 is different to the
gateway to 10.61.0.0/16.  In this case the 10.61.3.0/24 route must appear
first.

When you say you're trying to connect to the switch do you mean to the
maintenance console?

Could you post the output of the "ifconfig eth0", "netstat -arn" and "arp -a"
commands?
