Paul's key is kosher:-

Command> showpref
pub 1024D/49E2CF4C created: 2001-07-25 expires: never trust: -/q
(1). Paul Mackerras <paulus at samba.org>
Cipher: RIJNDAEL, TWOFISH, CAST5, BLOWFISH, 3DES
     Hash: RIPEMD160, SHA1

What does your gpg --version say?

RIJNDAEL is the new AES(DES replacement) and is avaiable in recent
versions.

I suggest 1.06 for a bnuch of security and functionality reasons.

Regards
