You need to ensure that your ethernet port is also on the same subnet
so the routing can go direct.

Since you aren't getting online anyway, just set 

	ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1

and then try to `ping 10.0.0.138`.

If that fails then you aren't talking to your ADSL modem correctly
and it is either a cabling or hardware problem.

PS.  For those who are online and have aliases available the best
was to enable the interface is:

	ifconfig eth0:1 10.0.0.1
