NIS+ client cache question

Hi,
I'm facing some problem in gathering information about
NIS+ client cache behavior. Maybe someone can help me
out in finding out what happens if NIS+ client tries
to contact a server directly to NIS+ port (previously
gotten through RPC Portmapper and cached) and it
doesn't get any response.
Is there any timeout after which it gives up using
NIS+ port and send again a Portmapper request?
If yes, what is the default value and how can the
admin eventually change it?

Thanks in advance,
Elisa
