nis+ client

I am using redhat 7.1 with the latest nisplus
utilities and trying to use pam_unix2 (I presume I
need this for logins?).  Unfortunately, not working. 
I can niscat passwd.org_dir and getent on passwd but
getent on the shadow db shows no passwords.

I can su to a nis+ userid, but not login as the user.

any ideas?
