The silence that greeted this post suggested to me that maybe the
answer should be obvious to a man of my capabilities.
After a lot of searching, I found that I had libnss_wins already
installed, so that couldn't be the reason why putting wins in
nsswitch.conf was having no effect.
After a reboot, however, it worked like a dream. I thought that
nsswitch.conf would have been read dynamically, as and when needed, but
apparently not. So I'll file that piece of information away as well.
So:
me = 1 + 'happy bunny';
