Yes, you're right. I think I'm making it harder than it actually is.

My problem is:

when working with smbclient and a program like fusesmb (which makes use of
the smbclient.so) and smbnetfs it looks as if the owner and group settings
and the permissions of the files on the server are reported in the right
manner. All files have the same owner/group and permissions... Is this
normal? I know that this question actually belongs in another maillist...

Now I thought this has something to do with the smbfs versus cifs, but as
you notice this is not the case.
