Yes there are newer versions for older kernels.

There is a lightly tested backport of cifs 1.45 which should build on
your kernel
    http://pserver.samba.org/samba/ftp/cifs-cvs/cifs-1.45.tar.gz
the slightly newer 1.46 version of cifs (almost current with mainline)
is on kernel.org and available via git

http://kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/sfrench/cifs-backport-old-kernels.git
These should build on kernels up to 2.6.16 (they may even build for some
2.4 kernels) but the most recent has not been
tried on a wide variety of older kernels.
