SuSE uses /etc/samba/smbfstab and an extra smbfs init script which
handles smbfs and cifs mounts. These are excluded from the init script
which does the usual mount.

This allows us to add credential information to /etc/samba/smbfstab
which is by default only readable by the root user.

But in general I also like the gentoo approach Dave mentioned in his
answer.

Should we work on unifying this accros the Linux vendors?
