I'm getting a similar error using kernel 2.4.20, CIFS 1.20c, and mount.cifs V1.5 from Samba3.0.8pre2. I'm trying to connect to a share on my W2KPro destop, which in this case is an extra HDD. I tried using both //mymachinename/e$ as well as //xx.xx.xx.xx/e$ for the share locations.
