Hi Matt,

The Distributed File System uses "referrals" to redirect clients (like
JCIFS) to different machines. File server admins use the DFS tool to
create domain-based or stand-alone DFS points that defines the DFS
namespace and topology.

Unless you're providing a general purpose component to customers who
could be using DFS you probably don't need to worry about it. Also
stand-alone DFS points are much less common these days compared to
domain-based (although IIRC someone did report this issue shortly
after the release that broke it).
