heavily pushing this approach with their Windows 2003 servers.

The only real difference (at the session level) is that naked transport
doesn't have the NBT Session Request exchange.  Other than that, it's
identical.

If you send the Session Request, you'll either get a timeout or an error
message back (I've tested it, and the info's in the book).
