Besides, *if* the client is supposed to do timezone/DST-related 
adjustments, how is getting the local VM's default timezone object 
supposed to help?

Keep in mind that if there is a DST period at all and when it applies is 
*highly* locale-dependant, and it's rather unlikely that the client's VM 
default timezone happens to match the server's setting (unless you're in 
the same country).
