Novell originally came up with their own low-level protocols, known as IPX
and SPX. Their filesharing protocol is known as NCP (I think) and it runs
on top of IPX/SPX the way that NFS runs on top of TCP/UDP/IP. Novell is
in the process of moving toward NCP over native IP.

Anyway, Novell Netware really has nothing to do with SMB/CIFS filesharing.
They are different protocol suites.

However, several years ago someone at Novell did manage to port Samba so
that it ran on top of the Novell NetWare OS. (Novell has their own server
OS). More recently, (due, in part, to GPL paranoia) Novell started trying
to write their own CIFS implementation.

It may take them a while... :)
