One more note.  Your subject line reads: "issue with nbns response".
The problem doesn't actually have anything to do with the NBNS (NetBIOS Name
Server).  The NBNS itself will not respond to a Node Status query.
Only an end-node can reply to Node Status.  It *is* possible for an end-
node to also offer the NBNS service, which is confusing.

NBNS is the general name for the NetBIOS Name Server.  Microsoft's
implementation of the NBNS is called WINS, and people tend to know that name
better.  The term NBNS is also sometimes used to refer to the NBT
Name Service as a whole, but that's not actually how the RFCs define it.
