Thanks for the pointer, but this seems to only do DNS, not other
nsswitch options such as /etc/hosts or NIS.  Not an absolute
impediment, but it would be nice to support them for users who need
them.

Getting nsswitch correct probably requires using the system libc,
which means gethostbyname_a is the only option.
