Thanks, it was perfectly working prior to rebooting the server. Any suggestion to fix this issue would be appreciated. How to fix “ADLOCAL\jlspellberg ADLOCAL\domain” to username / group name only?

That was the first mention of a crash, but it seems that the OP has been
trying various idmap backends (and probably other things), so whilst
Samba shouldn't crash, who knows if it isn't self inflicted. Yes, the
crash should be investigated first.
What isn't helping is the sanitisation
We have been given DOMAIN/WORKGROUP 'AD'
The connecting user appears to be from the 'ADLOCAL' DOMAIN/WORKGROUP
The REALM is 'AD.UCHICAGO.EDU' but the log fragments show what appears
to be the machines FQDN 'midway3-dm1.rcc.local'
Nothing matches.
