There was a big update of cifs vfs in 2.6.6, which fixed a couple of issues
that could affect memory usage as you describe.   I have not produced a
patch to go from 2.6.4 to current version of cifs vfs but there are only
two to three minor global kernel changes that would have to be changed so
it is doable.
