[Samba] SAMBA 3.0.4 authorisation issues

I have configured samba 3.0.4 as follows:


./configure --with-krb5=/usr/local --with-automount --with-pam --with-utmp
--with-winbind --with-libsmbclient --with-netlib='-lresolv'

ran make and make install. When I run 

./smbclient \\<hostname>\<useraccount> 

I get the following:

session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Logfile looks like this:

[2004/06/03 15:41:56, 1] auth/auth_util.c:make_server_info_sam(822)
  User guest in passdb, but getpwnam() fails!
[2004/06/03 15:41:56, 2] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(312)
  check_ntlm_password:  Authentication for user [] -> [] FAILED with error
NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
[2004/06/03 15:41:56, 2] smbd/server.c:exit_server(568)
  Closing connections

I've been looking at documentation but am at a loss. Anyone got any ideas???
