building Samba

Hello-

I am a bit new to the Linux world...well actually I used to use Unix
boxes about 15 years ago but it has been awhile.  I need to customize
Samba a bit and would like to build it/debug it...so I tried running:

make smbd from within the samba-2.0.7/source directory and get
make: Nothing to be done for 'smbd'.

I touched all the files in the smbd directory and got the same thing.

I tried make all and got
*** No rule to make target 'all'. Stop

I scoured the docs but didn't see anything about building.

Also, I couldn't find any docs on the architecture of the smbd code.
Can anyone point me some docs on this topic?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
