smbfs in Linux 2.1.x

Hi...
Does anyone know if there will be a nice way to mount smb shares in Linux 2.1? There is the possibility of using smbmount & smbmnt but the performance is very poor and the method not very clean, leaving one process running per mount. The normal smbmount in 2.0 kernels works better, but I would really prefer to use 2.1 versions.
