smbclient creates bad tar files

I take that back about gzip fixing the .tar   what I did was something
else. and thought it was gzips doing.. he're is the progression
cp temp1.tar temp2.tar
tar -Af temp1.tar temp2.tar
(temp1 file is now twice as large as before but only containes 1 entry)
tar -Af temp1.tar temp2.tar
(temp1 file does not grow any larger, but contains both entries)

any later tar -Af temp1.tar temp2.tar creates proper additions to
filesize and entries. so it only happens once..  very strange.
