I've got Samba 2.2.2 on a FreeBSD 2.2.8-STABLE system that's pretty well behaving itself. It prints, it serves up shares, etc. It also thinks it is the PDC for a DCF domain here in my house, as well as the Master Browser and a WINS server. All of that works ducky with Win9x systems. But I cannot get my Win2K Pro notebook to join the domain, no matter how much I try. Symptoms: 1) The notebook says "Login failure: unknown user name or bad password." 2) A tethereal trace shows the PDC saying "NETLOGON SAM Response - user unknown" in the midst of a bunch of SMB session setup chatter. 3) The log file for the client shows: +--------------- | [2002/01/01 21:47:30, 0] rpc_server/srv_samr.c:api_samr_set_userinfo(672) | api_samr_set_userinfo: Unable to unmarshall SAMR_Q_SET_USERINFO. | [2002/01/01 21:47:30, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:startsmbfilepwent(171) | startsmbfilepwent_internal: unable to open file /usr/local/private/smbpasswd | Error was Permission denied | [2002/01/01 21:47:30, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:pdb_getsampwrid(1459) | unable to open passdb database. +--------------- 4) If I force the permissions on the smbpasswd file to be something other than 600, some process sets them back. 5) The smb and nmb daemons are running as root, the files in /usr/local/private are readable by root. Each time an attempt fails, the secrets.tdb file is altered. 6) The smbpasswd command seems to work fine, adding and deleting users and all, so the smbd =can= get to and alter the file. (BTW, what does an 'X' in the attributes field mean?) So, it looks to me like some process running as not-root is trying to read the password file and failing, and then passing the failure back up the stream. Attached is my smb.conf file. Here's a little background of our thinking. There are currently 2089 non-digest subscribers and 997 digest ones. This compares to the main samba list which has 1913 non-digested and 3506 digested subscribers. The total messages on samba-ntdom for both October & November combined is approximately 900. This is ~3,100 messages less than samba@samba.org during the same time frame. The samba-ntdom mailing list was first announced on January 30, 1998, with a purpose of supporting the new begun "NT Domains for UNIX" project. From the 1.9.18alpha releases until the official 2.2.0 release on April 17 of this year, the samba-ntdom year has provided a valuable forum for beta testing and development of the NT 4.0 domain control functionality in Samba. With the official (if not yet completed) domain control support in the 2.2 series, the majority of domain control questions have been posted to samba@samba.org. There has also been an increase in cross posting between these two lists. The decision to EOL this list was arrived at by carefully considering whether or not the list has completed its purpose. It is our belief that it has. The domain control support has become mainstream (it is not longer necessary to download cvs code to obtain nt4 style PDC support). The continued existence of the list has provided two problems. 1) Developers struggle to stay current with the samba-technical and mainstream samba mailing lists. As a result, bug reports and/or patches sent to samba-ntdom are often lost. 2) There are many questions which are duplicated between the two lists. Thus resulting in a duplication of effort to respond to them. In an attempt to better pool resources and provide better inter-activity with the Samba community, we will decommission this list on January 7, 2002. This gives you three weeks to re-subscribe yourself to the mainstream samba list should you so choose. At this list, any messages sent to samba-ntdom@samba.org will received an auto-responded message indicating the new closed status of the list. We would like to thank again all of those of you which helped to make the domain control support stable and accessible to the Samba community at large. You should all feel proud. :-) chau, jerry --------------------------------------------------------------------- SAMBA Team http://www.samba.org -- http://www.plainjoe.org --"I never saved anything for the swim back." I've had the path not found problem when joining a domain with winbind. Deleting the machine from SAM and the sid file from samba, and re-joining the domain fixed it for me. One way to see if this will fix it for you is to check the secret with the PDC. The fact that you can't ping your Linux box by the name doesn't sound like a DHCP problem to me, that's wins since you are in a NT network. Check the wins database to see if Linux is showing. If not check how the discovery is being done by wins. -----Original Message----- From: Abdoukhadre DIAGNE [mailto:adiagne@synapsys-conseils.sn] Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2002 11:22 AM To: samba-ntdom@lists.samba.org Subject: Netbios problem in a NT Domain Hi, I configured a linux box runnig Redhat 7.1 with samba 2.2.2 to join a NT domain. For some users it shows one time and the script continues on ok. For other users the script continually gives the "Access Denied Z:" error and they have to skip the logon script. I have heard that PDC & BDC kind of functionality can be implemented into Samba by using LDAP and having config file of bdc as "Preffered master = no" "User logon = yes" "Domain master = no". Is that true? Has any one tried any such things. If yes please give me how to go for that? Any PDF or Link will be of great help. 2. Can I use Winbind in below given environment? PDC -> Samba File server is member of samba pdc. I want to give rights at domain user level. So that I need not create local users. If not how to do that? Thanks in advance for spending your time. you want me to stop sending comments that spoil _your_ day? okay, well i'll tell you how you can do that. you can take a look at the samba-tng source code, take a look at the dcerpc.net web site, read the articles there, implement a portable, root-accessible-only inter-process-communication interface that allows for - an NT security context to be transferred over it. - a complete NT user profile including the 16-byte user session key plus the 8-byte NTLMSSP information [see fields in NET_USER_INFO_3, basically]. - plus allows some NetBIOS context information to be transferred [to fake up a NetBIOS-equivalent of gethostname() - it must be possible for get_client_addr(), get_client_name(), get_remote_name() and get_global_myname() to all work] - plus allow arbitrary-sized message passing with functionality equivalent to that offered by file descriptors (read, write, open, close). _when_ you can come back to me with such an implementation of the above, that allows independently linking programs to use the above API and nothing BUT the above API, and still expect the independent program to receive DCE/RPC and NT user-context info on port 139 whilst Samba [or any _other_ SMB server that conforms to the server-side of the same API] is running, then i will stop making you "not enjoy" reading tng-technical. if things get too bad for me, i will just unsubscribe from tng-technical and all other samba and samba-tng mailing lists. the open source community has already lost out on a golden opportunity by not ensuring that i remain involved in tracking and making up for microsoft's anti-competitive practices. there are _very_ few people in this world who are capable of doing what i can [catch up with microsoft man-decades development in a tenth to one hundredth of the time], and andrew tridgell has demonstrated by his behaviour whilst we were at linuxcare, and by management since of samba's development, that he is _not_ such a person. the deployment of TNG mainstream and its subsequent hardening and the rough edges cut off in a mainstream development / release cycle would have achieved in under four [probably painful!] months what andrew tridgell and jeremy allison wanted to see _me_ do [on my own] over a further development period of one or two years]. that would result in accelerated development the likes of which we [painfully!] saw with nmbd. bugs, bugs, galore _and fixed_ galore. we _learned_ from 1.9.17's nmbd [very bad] implementation and deployment. the result was another rapid rewrite and a very stable implementation. broken code released into the wild encourages other programmers to get involved and to see if they can fix it. if it ain't broke, they won't fix it! WHEN will you _get_ this, tridgell? WHEN will you _get_ this, allison? you can't do everything on your own. there is about TWO TO THREE ***HUNDRED*** man-years of development to catch up on. you've _got_ to take advantage of every development and man-management technique and strategy there is. and _you_ lot out there - users - reading this. yes, you, the ones bitching about microsoft all the time. if you can't get off your arses and support samba development, and instead are willing to pay thousands of dollars in license fees, then don't go crying to the US government or the European Commission about anti-competitive practices. if you are a company that has more than four hundred employees, the license fees that you pay in server / upgrade costs each year could fund two to three samba developers to replace and then maintain, at a quarter of the price, the server software you keep paying for. lkcl From ari at ui.edu Mon Jan 7 15:54:02 2002 From: ari at ui.edu (Arianto C Nugroho) Date: Tue Dec 2 02:37:18 2003 Subject: Samba 2.2 PDC with win2000 In-Reply-To: <3C39C9AF.4138A703@em.pucrs.br> References: <000801c1978e$c682dde0$330a0a64@rafal> <3C39C9AF.4138A703@em.pucrs.br> Message-ID: <1010447348.3c3a33f442a11@webmail.ui.edu> Quoting "Filipi D. Post them to samba@samba.org. This list was for when the ntdomain stuff was still experimental and not in the mainline code. Now that it's mainline, use the main list. > thanks Mike -- Michael H.
