smbd running as

My question is two fold.  I noticed that smbd is running as user nobody.
At least untill someone make a connection.  Then it looks as though smbd
forks and the child runs as the user making the connection.  Correct?  

So, my question is, is it possible to have the initial smbd start under a
different uid?

The second part is, does it matter?
