Two final suggestions...

1) Create an alternate hardware profile used when you're away from your network (I have a "battery" setting).  Disable your network
card in this setting (you can also disable quite a bit more and save power as well).
2) Create an alternate network profile and bindings for your PCMCIA card in the OTHER slot.  You can move the card to the other
PCMCIA slot (assuming space is available) and use a completely different network identity & bindings.
